Undetonated grenade found near home of former subdistrict chief in Lopburi

LOPBURI, June 19 – An M 26 hand grenade was found near the house of a former subdistrict head in the province Sunday and he believed that it may be politically motivated.

Police said 61-year-old Surin Krobthong, an ex-subdistrict chief who had received a prize for being an outstanding village chief, informed police that he saw a hand grenade near his home. Bomb experts rushed there immediately and found the M26 hand grenade lying with its pin nearby.

Mr Surin told journalists later that he would ask family members to move out of the house and stay with relatives for a while as he was worried for their safety.

Mr Surin, who was shot and wounded on March 24, 2009 with the gunman still at large, said he suspected that the latest motive to kill him was likely because he “supports a major political party contesting in the upcoming general election, whose canvasser was killed.”

Although he did not name the political party, it is believed that he refers to last Thursday incident in which Suban Chiraphanwanit was shot dead in Bangkok last Thursday.

His wife, Oraphin, and secretary Chanutphon Phothisamphanwong, accompanying him, were also shot and wounded.

Mr Suban was a key Bhumjaithai Party canvasser. He was the elder brother of Mallika Chiraphanwanit, a Bhumjaithai constituency candidate in Lop Buri. The police initially believed that the motive for the shooting involved local and national politics.

Pol Maj Chartchai Tang-iam, Commander of Lopburi provincial police, said police officers have been deployed to provide security at the house of ex-subdistrict chief while police have tightened security in the province and set up checkpoints around the clock until the election is concluded.
