Pattaya Police Crackdown on Foreign Bars Continues

Pattaya police continue the crackdown on foreign-related bars in an effort to change Pattaya’s international image and to squelch the use and sale of drugs in Pattaya bars.

In the latest raid, which is one of a series of expected police actions, the bars on notorious Soi 6 where many foreigners go to relax and unwind were raided by an overwhelming force of more than 300 Thai police officers on the evening of January 5.

“The raid was seen as more of a message than anything,” said one patron who was in the middle of getting to know a Thai lady on a sofa when the police crashed into the bar he was relaxing at with a cold beer and American Rock and Roll music playing in the background.

“They found nothing wrong in the bar. A few of the girls I was talking to earlier turned out to be guys, but if it takes 300 Thai cops to figure that out I don’t feel so bad,” he added.

The operation began with a parade and briefing at Pattaya Police Station led by Police Colonel Tirapong, the Deputy Commander of Chonburi Provincial Police. The officers then made their way from the Soi 9 police station to Soi 6 bars.

The raid was to find drugs because there had been informants who said drugs were being sold to foreigners by bar workers. This information seemed to be false, because there were no signs of drugs anywhere. Only a small percent of the Thai workers had taken drugs, urine tests revealed.
