Bangkok set to launch a new weekend market

BANGKOK, 25 June 2012 (NNT) – The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is planning to launch a new weekend market on Bang Bon 3 Road, in honor of Her Majesty the Queen’s upcoming 80th birthday.

Director of the Chatuchak Weekend Market Office, Arun Srijaroon, said with the new flea market, the BMA aims to create employment opportunities for nearby residents and provide new markets for local commodities.

The Crown Property Bureau recently agreed to lease a 120-rai plot of royal land on Bang Bon 3 Road to the BMA, whose goal is to develop the property into a commercial weekend market. The new market, situated near a host of industrial factories, operated by local business owners, is expected to provide much-needed space for the sale of local goods and services.

The lease contract between the City Hall and the Crown Property Bureau is expected to be inked in July.

The market will be divided into a variety of zones, which include outlet zones and zones designated for products from Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s SUPPORT Foundation.

The construction of the market is set to be completed in two years’ time.
